One of the most recognised and beautiful historical buildings in Ireland’s second largest city. I wanted to paint it at night because there is a great sense of atmosphere about it.

I enjoyed doing this. Very refreshing subject matter and it’s my first larger oil painting. This fellow was standing in the field opposite my house.

I had painted a few small sunset paintings and felt ready to do a much larger canvas when I did this. The sea took a lot of time and patience. Painted from 8th September to 18th October, 2011.

The wonderful cherry blossom comes out in spectacular glory in the middle of April. This is my tribute to it. There’s a row of these trees next to the Owenacurra river in the town nearest to me, Midleton.

This is the fourth painting of the same view, so I’ve all four seasons covered. Springs in previous years had harsh weather, so in 2011 with a pleasant April, my opportunity came.

Ever notice the eastern sky at a sunset? Sometimes you get lovely purples and blues in the sky especially during the winter. This painting records such a day and also the moon was rising at the same time, so you get a ‘Moonrise at Sunset’. Sold

Took some time to get into this, I had to translate not just from a reference photo to canvas, but also make up a colour scheme using red in every mix. Challenging but worth it! Sold.

Round towers were built in Ireland between the 11th and 12th centuries AD. This is a well-preserved structure, located on a coastal ridge overlooking the village of Ardmore, west Waterford. I spent over a month at it, the process of painting it was painstaking, stone by stone. Sold

In late December, 2009 a severe cold stretch of weather began that continued into early 2010. This painting records that time. Fortunately, because where I live is so close to the sea we were spared the worst of the snow and ice as can be seen from the fields, where muted greys and browns can be seen rather than a continuous blanket of white. This is my third painting in my series of painting the same view over four seasons.

I had noticed before I started painting this, that there is a fine contrast between street lighting and the twilight sky, between the yellow/orange glow and deep indigo of the sky. I was staying in Galway when I started on this, a fine town with an impressive cathedral. I like this painting a lot.
