Panoramic View from Curraghdermot

Panoramic View From Curraghdermot watermark

I’ve been wanting to paint this view for the last five or six years.  When I used to work on archaeological digs, one of the jobs was in advance of a motorway between Fermoy and Mitchelstown.  On the commute trip, I would pass this place twice a day.  It’s on the Dungourney to Castlelyons road, at a townland called Curraghdermot.  An amazing view of two mountain ranges in Munster is on the horizon.  On the left are the Galtees, straddling the border between Limerick and Tipperary.  On the right are the Knockmealdowns that form part of the border between Waterford and Tipperary.  So even though I’m standing in County Cork, three counties can be seen.  The location is in front of a disused field entrance, next to a disused lay-by.  At around 600 feet up, it’s on some of the highest ground in East Cork.

I painted it all outdoors from life.  I had enough fine days to complete the painting, due to an unusually long, warm, spell of weather.  It’s a  landmark picture for me, as it shows I can do a detailed painting from life and not be reliant on photo references.

Buttercups In A Field In Rathhaha – Sold

Buttercups In A Field In Rathhaha

Painted on 3rd and 4th June, 2013

Size: 11.3 inches x 8.7 inches

Oils on Acrylic Painting Paper

In late May and early June, the buttercups come out in their full yellow glory. I was looking for a field which wasn’t mown for silage and had plenty of these wild flowers. I found one not too far from home. We’re having great fine weather and I’m trying to get the most out of it by painting outdoors every day.

Two Moonlit Bales

Two Moonlit Bales

This is the only time I’ve done a painting based on another one of my paintings. Following on from the painting of the two bales I did at night. I decided to do something more detailed. I’m not sure if it’s a better painting than the one I did in the open air. Certainly the experience of painting this wasn’t worth remembering!

Bales in the Strand Field

Bales in the Strand Field

This is a view just outside home of our field that borders Garryvoe Beach. Painted from life over several weekends from 14th January to 17th February, 2007. I was lucky with the weather; it was remarkablly settled at the time. I wanted to show the vastness of the field and give a sense of perspective with the bales.

Summer View of Garryvoe

Summer View of Garryvoe

This is the first of my views of Garryvoe the place where I live. The view is from one of our fields, the ‘High Field’. I had been wanting to do this view for a few years before getting around to doing it. At the time, it was a very ambitious goal. The sky appealed to me a lot, I like how over in the east and south opposite to where the sun sets, the sky goes purple to a deep blue near the horizon.
Painted from 28th June to 23rd September, 2006.

Long Garden Field and Shed – Sold

Long Garden Field and Shed

The laneway from our farm leads into the field depicted here, called the ‘Long Garden’. The shed is of a neighbouring farmer’s. I painted this in one sitting, positioned in the middle of the field surrounded by wheat. Painted on 5th August, 2002.
